About Dr. Carolyn I. Williams

Long Bio (372 words)

Dr. Carolyn Williams founded AdultLearningU.com to coach educators of adults in the design and development of courses including applying andragogical concepts; building and managing online communities of inquiry; and developing comprehensive syllabi, and assessment rubrics.

Carolyn applies active learning strategies as well as adult learning theory, principles, and best practices as part of course learning activities to engage learners and assist in developing their ability to think critically, become self-directed, and reach transformative learning.  She is adept at building and managing communities of inquiry that promote critical thinking and collaboration.

Carolyn recently graduated with distinction from Capella University with a PhD in Postsecondary and Adult Education.  Her expertise is in andragogy—the art and science of adult learning—as it applies to teaching online.

Carolyn’s dissertation is titled Faculty Perceptions of Andragogy in Faculty Development for Online Teaching. She researched faculty perspectives of the inclusion of adult learning theory and principles in their institution’s required training to teach online.  She found that this training focused mainly on the technical aspects of the learning management systems, making videos, and other technological aspects but rarely did the training include how to teach adults.

Carolyn was in the second graduating class (1993) of the University of Phoenix Online where she earned a BS in business administration.  She realized that learning in the online environment would quickly become the norm so, she continued her education and earned a master’s degree in instructional design.  After taking several courses in education and e-learning, earning a certificate in Project Management, and working for several years, Carolyn decided it was time to get her doctorate.  She found the interactive learning format and course structure at Capella to be an excellent fit for her needs.

She has taught adults in both academia and the corporate world in the online and traditional environments for 30 years.  She has created several fully online, blended, and traditional courses and revised the curriculum of several traditional course offerings for online delivery.

Carolyn lives on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state with her awesome husband, Paul.  Between them they have seven wonderful children and 15 delightful grandkids ranging from 1–18 years.  Carolyn enjoys kayaking, walking, traveling, weaving, and paper crafts.  Connect with me at www.adultlearningu.com.
